The Feldenkrais Method of Somatic Education

The Feldenkrais Method® offers a transformative mind-body approach to movement and learning in two complementary forms: one-on-one lessons in Functional Integration®, and group lessons in Awareness Through Movement®.

This work was created and developed by Dr. Moshe Feldenkrais (1904-1984), a distinguished scientist and martial artist. Dr. Feldenkrais’ method brings together and integrates multiple fields of investigation including neuroscience, movement and behavioral psychology. These elements are forged into a dynamic movement modality that is direct and effective in bringing about awareness and a reshaping of our habits of learning and being.

Awareness Through Movement classes

Awareness Through Movement lessons are based in gentle movement sequences, to bring attention to your whole self — mindfully and compassionately. Through slowing down, we begin sensing and feeling ourselves in movement, which enables us to start to make clear distinctions between areas where we experience more or less comfort, ease or “over-efforting.” Through this experiential learning, we begin to sense (and think, and feel) outside of habit. All of the parts of ourselves contribute to how we feel in our bodies. Becoming aware of our habits and ways of learning can bring about a positive shift in our capacities in movement and functioning.

These classes are an opportunity to learn in a quiet, individually-based exploration, within a group setting. They are open to all adults, including those with neurological difficulties, chronic pain, injuries, or other issues.

The more we know about ourselves, the more we can cultivate comfort, ease and efficiency.

Functional Integration lessons

Functional Integration lessons are done one-on-one, and are a hands-on approach to learning, sensing and moving. Each individual has a history in body and mind, including infancy and childhood experiences, environment, injuries and accidents, life events, illness, and the aging process.

These lessons are a rich opportunity to learn about oneself, through gentle touch and movement, over time. When the “work” of moving, is taken over by the Practitioner, you are afforded the chance to feel what is happening in your body and mind on a deeper level. This enriched awareness allows you to make new choices, create new sensory experiences, and cultivate healthy, efficient habits.

Sandrine works with adults ranging from 20 – 95 years old, in her private practice. Her students include professional athletes, physical laborers, those who are terminally ill, people in stages of post-surgical/post-trauma healing, people experiencing grave health issues including neuro-degenerative conditions and dementia. She also works with individuals experiencing a spectrum of psychological and emotional challenges including addiction, insomnia, and anxiety.

“The lessons are designed to improve ability, to expand the boundaries of the possible, to turn the impossible into the possible, the difficult into the easy and the easy into the pleasant.”
